The taking pictures of dying makes 2020 the deadliest 12 months ever for Colorado Springs | Colorado Springs Information
Colorado Springs police say a 36-year-old man who was shot dead Tuesday evening was the 39th murder in 2020, making it the deadliest year in the city and dwarfing the 24 murders in 2019 been.
Matthew Morrow of Colorado Springs was found with a gunshot wound around 9:26 pm when police responded to a call about a shooting on the 1200 block of Potter Drive, according to a press release. Morrow died shortly after being rushed to a local hospital, police said.
The El Paso County Coroner Office has not yet officially determined the cause of death, but police said they have enough evidence to treat it as murder.
20-year-old Enrique Joseph Martinez, who was arrested in connection with Morrow’s death, could face charges of second degree murder, police said.
Martinez was held in El Paso County Jail on Thursday on bail of $ 200,000.
The police did not say what led to the death or whether others might have been involved.
“Further details may be published in the future,” the police said in a statement.
However, police confirmed that 2020 was the deadliest year they have ever seen.
“We talk about records because the numbers are something we can capture,” said police spokesman Lt. James Sokolik. “But each of these numbers represents a ruined life and a family missing a loved one. It’s a terrible thing.”
The previous record for murders in Colorado Springs was 38, according to police, which was set in 2018.
The city also had a record number of road deaths that year at 50, beating the previous record of 48 in 2018.
