The Pikes Peak Summit House is closed to visitors, officials from Colorado Springs said Monday.
The America’s Mountain site will remain closed indefinitely, and facilities will not be available at the summit, according to a city press release. The Pikes Peak Highway stays open for the summit when the weather is nice.
Hikers should be prepared to hike back downhill if necessary as the road is closed. Visitors can check motorway conditions by calling 719-385-7784. Weather conditions can change quickly, especially in winter, officials warned. Hikers are encouraged to postpone their trips in the event of forecast inclement weather, including snow, frost, or high winds.
According to official figures, construction of the new $ 66 million Pikes Peak Summit House will continue. The new 38,000 square foot Summit House is expected to open in the spring of this year to replace the now closed structure.
According to the Summit House project website, Pikes Peak is one of the most visited mountains in the world and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Colorado. Each year more than 750,000 people reach the summit via the Pikes Peak Highway, the Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, or the Barr or Crags trails.
Construction of the new Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak cogwheel railway is also continuing, according to the cogwheel project website. Work on the $ 100 million project, which includes the renovation of the tracks, cogwheels, railcars, and depots of the cogwheel train, began in March 2019. The first cogwheel ride is scheduled for May.
